The Shakespeare Schools Festival South Africa, or SSFSA for short is based on the Shakespeare Schools Festival, also known as SSF which originates from the United Kingdom. It is an additional educational programme, their purpose is dedicated to improving language and social skills through the performing arts in South Africa. SSFSA aims to mobilise the dreams of our country’s youth through performing arts and education
Kseniya Filinova-Bruton, who is the Festival's coordinator and creative director said amongst other core important objectives of the Festival social cohesion, promoting life skills, literature, ambition and educational entertainment are crucial.
When this great initiative started, SSF UK provided some of the resources. In the past seven years, this has dramatically changed, SSF SA has developed its own scripts, with the support of English and Drama teachers of the participating schools. So far, there have been a few versions of scripts available in IsiZulu, IsiXhosa and Afrikaans. As an edition to the progress of the Festival there is a video version of Romeo and Juliet in South African Sign Language.
We are looking forward to this year's Shakespeare Schools Festival South Africa. It promises to be spectacular!
