Various Heritage Day celebrations are scheduled to take place all over Cape Town this Tuesday, which will include the much-anticipated renaming of Keizersgracht Street in District Six back to Hanover Street. The street name change is part of a bigger movement which involves a court case for former residents, including the elderly that lived in District Six to be moved back into the area.
Current Mayor of Cape Town Mr. Dan Plato said in a statement: "The forced removals that took place during apartheid will always bring painful memories to those who resided in District Six. The proposal is that the renaming could assist in igniting good memories for those who suffered from and experienced these removals."
Many former and current District Six residents are expected to attend the renaming celebrations on Heritage Day from 9am.
