Kontras is made up of four friends who met in Stellenbosch and connected due to their shared musical experiences. Jacques Groenewald on vocals, Andrew Veldman on lead guitar, Louwrens Labuschagne on the bass guitar and Daniël Botha driving their sound forward on drums. They grew up on music that ranges from a varied mix of punk, pop, metal, and hip-hop. Kontras doesn’t define themselves as a singular concept but as a collection of the shared experiences of young adults who feel frustrated with the status quo.
We caught up with the busy band to chat about their interesting sound and future plans. Here is how it unfolded:
1. Tell us your favorite Tequila story.
Here follows the list of our collective memories of good nights with a lot of tequila…
2. What’s your take on the current state of Cape Town’s live music scene?
There is space for all types of musical acts in cape-town, which is a city quite open to new and experimental acts. Seeing as we are an Afrikaans alt-rock act, it is cool to see so many other new similar acts pop up. We hope for a full revival of the Cape Town kuier gees.
3. Congratulations on making the line-up for the International Tequila Festival 2019. What can we expect from your set?
First off, we can’t wait to play our final show of the year at the first installment of the International Tequila Festival, and here is hoping to many more! Expect a high energy, memorable and just straight-up fun show to take a few (or more) tequila shots to. Many of our tracks are inspired by late nights laced with tequila...
4. What’s your favorite summer activity/experience in Cape Town?
Outdoor music fests, road trips around the coast, cracking a few cold ones, and not working (even though we should).
5. Which is your favorite Tequila that you recommend to your friends and why?
Tequila is like pizza. Even when it’s bad, it’s still pretty good. In other words, ons hou van tequila.
