The Back Stage of Kasi World Comedy Finale: Comedians Came Jokes Blazing

On Saturday 22 June, the highly anticipated Kasi World Comedy Showdown finally took place at Baxter Theatre Centre in Rondebosch . The comedy competition is an initiative of Jive Cape Town Funny Festival.

The aim of the contest was to go deep in the heart of Cape Town to scour the city for the next best funny guy or girl. The search was split into four heats that were held in four different townships over a period of two months. Semi finals were held at Makukhanye Art Room in Khayelitsha, The Black Box Theatre at Rent Office, Delft, the Kraai4Theatre in Kraaifontein and the Zolani Centre in Nyanga. After the intense search, the nine finalists were:

Sxuva – Khayelitsha

Arlene Petersen – Lavender Hills

Kwanda Kwaymaster Ndoda – Claremont

Hlekuncame Entertainment – Kraaifontein

Chantal Jaxx Venter – Observatory

Obakeng Moroe – Kraaifontein

Ayabonga Kene – Gugulethu

Prince M’baya – Observatory

Sim Sima – Tableview

Each comedian had a minimum of three minutes to blow away the judges and audience members alike as the winner was determined by both judges and audience votes. Every comedian that stepped onstage brought the best of their set but when it came to an end, the victor was Obakeng Moroe who has a full time job as a graphic designer, has only been a comedian for six months and got his first break at NOMAD Bistro, he told Cape Town Experiences Magazine that he initially doubted his comedic skills after witnessing the likes of Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Kagiso Lediga and Loyiso Gola. And, he merely used comedy as therapy and was in utter disbelief of his victory. But with his persistence, he became today's winner.

The founder of The Jive Cape Town Funny Festival Eddy Cassar said he was thrilled with the explosive finale; "I am proud that this venture into the townships has produced more than nine hilarious finalists and much interest in the Kasi World Comedy Showdown. In the past I have witnessed raw talent developing into confident world-class acts."

Eddy also lamented, "Stand up comedy is a particularly tough art form but it is plays a pivotal part in uniting South Africans of diverse races and culture to laugh with each other. What comedy reveals is that we face a unified reality as a nation. Our differences are the same." His advised all the participating comedians at the prestigious Jive Cape Town Funny Festival; "Keep working hard and keep getting on as many stages as you can." The winner of the competition, Obakeng Moroe says he intends to buy drinks for his fellow contestants. What a kind heart he has!

One of the co-organizers of the event Pius Xulu who is a comedian himself had this to say, "I'm thankful and have no words about how I feel about the entire Kasi World Comedy Showdown 2019 experience. It's a huge achievement for the comedy industry and the performing arts to actually recognize local talent. We are ready to produce world-class shows. Please give us the benefit of the doubt and get us on board in your projects or help us start new projects. The Kasi World Comedy Showdown 2019 finale has proven beyond a shadow of a reasonable doubt that yes we can!"
