Wine And Heritage Hand In Hand

September is Heritage Month – culminating with Heritage Day on the 24th – and a time for South Africans to celebrate their roots. With family and friends set to gather all around South Africa to celebrate the long Heritage Day weekend, Stellenbosch Hills an award winning wine cooperative located in the farming district of Vlottenburg, just outside Stellenbosch, South Africa’s viniferous capital, has put together some special wine pairing recommendations to go with your traditional heritage day meal.

In partnership with the Private Hotel School, the Heritage Food & Wine Pairing for September 2019 features a stellar line up of some of your favourite wines for a mere R75 per person.

No celebration is really complete without some bubbles to toast the occasion, and a 1707 Reserve White 2018, an award winning wine that scooped Double Gold at the National Wine Challenge Top 100 South African wines competition and is definitely the way to kick off your Heritage get-together. This elegant, voluptuous wine is resplendent with aromas of stone fruit, honey, zesty citrus and vanilla oak spice. The palate is elegant, rich, textured and balanced by lively citrus fruit and crisp acidity. It comes together in perfect union with Cape Malay pickled fish and a slice of crisp, garlic-flavoured bruschetta.

Without further ado is the 1707 Reserve Red 2015, a gold medal winner at the prestigious Veritas event in 2017 amongst a host of awards. The wine's ingredients include dark berry fruit, plums, dark chocolate and hints of black pepper and cigar box on the nose. The palate reveals well-balanced structure with juicy, yet firm tannin. Every sip concludes in a long lingering finish.

The last of the bunch, the leader of the pack, the headline act is none other than Stellenbosch Hills Muscat de Hambourg 2018, a brand of wine that has been in exitence for the past thirty years. Sunset coloured, the wine is explosively fragrant with candy floss, boiled sweets, rose petal and violets. On the palate, it's elegant and beautifully balanced with great length and complexity.

The Stellenbosch Hills Heritage Food and Wine Pairing will be hosted at the winery's tasting room and is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and Saturday 10am to 3pm. Prior reservations are a must you can contact them on info@stellenbosch-hills.co.za as well as follow them on Twitter and Facebook.
